FAQ

Below are the Frequently Asked Questions we get about our service, our scanners, and what our scan reports mean.

HOW DOES 3D BODY SCANNING WORK?

Our system used an infrared camera and a turntable. You simply stand still on the turntable with your arms in an A-shape while it completes a full revolution. The camera takes over 600 infrared images of your body that the software then compiles into an accurate 3D model of your body.

HOW LONG DOES A BODY SCAN TAKE?

A single scan takes only 35-40 seconds for the full rotation of the turntable. The software takes approximately a minute to process all of the information into your full scan report. Then we’ll email it to you and sit down for a full consult to explain everything.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOR MY 3D BODY SCAN?

The most form-fitting clothes or underwear are ideal for body scanning. The scanner accuracy means the more bare skin, the better. You will still get accurate results from a long set of tights, but they will add a very small amount to your measurements. Wearing the same clothing things for all of your scans is important to keep results consistent.

For men: tight underwear is best.
For women: tight underwear or tights and a sports bra is best.

Nudity is not necessary, and awkward for everyone!

HOW ACCURATE IS THE SCAN?

Our scanners are accurate to within 2 mm. It’s also very consistent.

You’ll get a full 3D render of your body.

IS 3D BODY SURFACE SCANNING SAFE?

It’s very safe. The scanner uses an infrared camera unit from a Microsoft Kinect unit.

WHAT INFORMATION DOES A 3D BODY SCAN GIVE ME?

Our health reports include:

  • Health overview
  • Body composition analysis
  • Body circumference measurements
  • Posture analysis
  • Calorie analysis including basal metabolic rate, and calorie expenditure
  • Waist shape analysis
  • Health risks
HOW DOES 3D BODY SURFACE SCANNING MEASURE MY BODY COMPOSITION?

The scanners have an algorithm that was built to emulate DEXA scanning. It was developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who DEXA scanned and surface scanned hundreds of people. An algorithm was then developed to back calculate the results of a DEXA scan based on a 3D body scan.

It works because the outside of your body is highly indicative of its internal composition. An accurate external measurement is all that’s needed for an accurate prediction of your internal composition to be calculated.

WHAT HEALTH RISKS WILL I SEE?

Our reports will show:

  • general risk level
  • added risk of cancer
  • added risk of cardiovascular disease
  • added risk of respiratory disease
  • added risk of all other disease.
HOW DOES A BODY SURFACE SCANNER CALCULATE MY HEALTH RISKS?

Your waist is a strong all-purpose indicator of your disease risks. Our scanners measure your waist, and then determine how much higher your risk factor is compared to those with an ideal waist shape.

The scan results does not consider factors like diet, lifestyle, genetics, or environment. Just what your body shape says about your risk levels.

IS 3D BODY SURFACE SCANNING AS ACCURATE AS DEXA SCANS?

The algorithm we use calculates body composition from a 3D body surface scan to within a couple of percent accuracy of what a DEXA scan will give. Exact equivalances will depend on the type of DEXA scan, but generally a 3D body surface scan will be very close to a DEXA.

We’ve had our own DEXA scans then immediately surface scanned to compare results. The difference between fat % was around 1.5%, and lean mass around 0.5%-1%. Very close indeed!

HOW DOES BODY SURFACE SCANNING COMPARE TO BIO-IMPEDANCE ANALYSIS (BIA)?

BIA scanning works by passing electricity through your body and estimating your body composition from the resistance the electricity meets. BIA has existed for decades and results can be highly variable.

Our testing has found BIA gives significantly different results to our scanners, and DEXA scans. Body fat tends to be measured much lower on BIA, which can make consistent body composition tracking difficult.

3D BODY SCANNING FOR CLOTHES FITTING

A 3D body scan can give you high accuracy information to help you choose clothes that fit. Our reports will include all of your crucial measurements to help you shop online with just a size chart for reference.

I GOT A 3D BODY SCAN, WHAT’S NEXT?

Wonderful! We hope you found the scan to be easy, and our consult to be informative.

The next steps depend on your goals. Everyone comes to us because they want to understand more about their health and wellbeing. Now you need to decide what to do.

Clients using a personal trainer or dietitian can use their report to show their current physical state. Then we can scan you again and measure your progress.

HOW LONG SHOULD I WAIT BETWEEN SCANS?

You can get a body scan every day if you’d like! But that might not be the best use of your time and money. It depends on what you’re trying to achieve.

A standard time between scan is 4-12 weeks depending on how hard you’re planning to work:

  • 4 weeks: you’re planning to work really hard with diet changes and exercise. We don’t see many people getting scanned that often but some do and achieve impressive results.
  • 6-8 weeks is an ideal time frame to see your body change. This is a standard time range for trainers and dietitians to design programs for their clients.
  • 12 weeks might be suitable for those taking their physical change a little slower. Small to moderate changes in consumption and physical activity.
  • More than 12 weeks. We have some clients wanting to occasionally check their physical state. It’s more about maitaining than changing. For those people, 3 times a year could be ideal.
